After reading the synopsis, I have been waiting to watch this movie. Finally the DVD has been released. Happy Birthday is a sad-romantic drama about two lovers who cannot be with each other, by choice.

Xiao Nan (Louis Koo) and Xiao Mi (Rene Liu) are lovers when they are in University. Xiao Nan is very popular with girls and he has many girlfriends, but he only loves Xiao Mi. Xiao Mi knows about Xiao Nan's feelings, but she is afraid losing him, just as she did when her mother left her when she was a little girl. Therefore, she suggested that they both remain best friends as she believed that not having each other is the best way to keep a romantic relationship. I really think I can understand this part.

The story continues with Xiao Nan and Xiao Mi in their on-off relationship. One day, Xiao Nan tells Xiao Mi that he is getting married. From then on, Xiao Mi would receive a birthday greeting from Xiao Nan every year. It is just like a clue to prove that love still exists between them. How is it that a person can wait for another wholeheartedly for so many years ? Is it waiting or just knowing that the someone is around makes you feel good ?

It turned out that the greetings were actually not sent by Xiao Nan as he had already passed away. He wanted to protect Xiao Mi from the truth. Perhaps witholding the truth hurts a person even more, but who is supposed to blame for what has happened ?

I like the song 花季未了 very much, and I agree that the lyrics speak volumes, especially 花季未了, 天也黑了, 分分秒秒, 相见离别都仍觉得你最好.
